Introducing the New American Board of Magnetic Resonance Safety

AMBRS Press Release

On January 12, the AMERICAN BOARD OF MAGNETIC RESONANCE SAFETY (ABMRS) announced its creation. As the press release states in its opening line, "For the first time in the 30 years since the initial clinical introduction of magnetic resonance technology, an organization is formed specifically to credential professionals in MR safety."

The purpose of the ABMRS is "to improve the safety of medical and research magnetic resonance (MR) environments by certifying that our clinical, physicist, technical, and research diplomates have the necessary a) basic science knowledge of the underlying safety principles, and b) decision making capabilities to apply them, that are required of those who are assigned to ensure safety in MR environments."

The ABMRS is working with governmental, professional and industry organizations from around the world, including the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), the American College of Radiology (ACR), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), and the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), to establish meaningful, uniform and internationally accepted standards for MR safety competencies.

The AMBRS will offer Magnetic Resonance Safety Certified™ (MRSC™) credentials for professionals responsible for the safety of clinical and / or research magnetic resonance sites who satisfy the requirements. Eligible positions include magnetic resonance medical director / physician (MRMD), magnetic resonance safety officer (MRSO) and magnetic resonance safety expert (MRSE). Once certification has been achieved by means of passing a formal examination, certification will remain valid for 10 years.
