MRI Safety - Ear Protection
Do you provide ear protection for your patients? What kind? And what about your staff? Do you provide ear protection for them as well?
MRI systems produce a great deal of acoustic noise, which can have damaging effects on the ears of both patients and staff. Even magnets as strong as .5T can have harmful effects.
Let's make sure our ears and the ears of our patients are protected. Please contact Caryn Nolen, NationalRad's Director of Quality Assurance (QA) and Chief Radiologic Technologist, at CNOLEN@NATIONALRAD.COM to discuss proper ear protection and MRI safety.

Postoperative MRI After Failed Shoulder Instability Surgery
In July, NationalRad president and musculoskeletal radiologist MICHAEL B. ZLATKIN, MD, FRCPC joined orthopaedic specialists such as Stephen Burkhart, MD and Richard Hawkins, MD for a VUMEDI WEBINAR entitled BONE LOSS IN SHOULDER INSTABILITY: IMAGING & RECONSTRUCTION. Dr. Zlatkin presented "Postoperative MRI After Failed Shoulder Instability Surgery", and added steps to successfully imaging the post-operative shoulder following failed shoulder instability surgery, including using artifact-limiting protocols and know the questions to ask when reviewing MR images.
Dr. Zlatkin is considered to be one of the foremost experts in shoulder imaging. He will be presenting at the INTERNATIONAL SKELETAL SOCIETY (ISS) 41ST ANNUAL MEETING AND MUSCULOSKELETAL IMAGING COURSE: FUNDAMENTALS TO ADVANCED CONCEPTS in Edinburgh, Scotland and the ISRAEL RADIOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION (ISRA) INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL MEETING at the Dan Eilat Hotel (on the Red Sea), Israel on shoulder imaging later this month.

ICD-10 Coding Transition Tip Sheets
October marks one year to go until ICD-10 goes into effect. EXCELLUS BLUECROSS BLUESHIELD, a nonprofit independent licensee of Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, has developed a CODING TRANSITION TIP SHEET, which shows a comparison of ICD-9 to ICD-10. The tip sheet covers everything from number of digits and placeholder characters to abbreviations, exclusions and default codes. Visit and bookmark this sheet for a quick and easy reference guide to ICD-9 coding versus ICD-10 coding.
MUNSON HEALTHCARE, a hospital system in Michigan, has also developed a resource center to support the ICD-10 transition at MUNSONHEALTHCARE.ORG/ICD10. Visit their ICD-10 DOCUMENTATION TIP FOR TRAUMATIC FRACTURE, to learn how a traumatic fracture would be coded under ICD-9 versus ICD-10.
Stay tuned for more tips on transitioning to ICD-10!
